I have an install disc made by a friend and I am ready to install Ubuntu 9 on my new Dell Inspiron 15 laptop. I am curious to know whether it would be better for me to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive or to partition my hard drive. I have 167Gb free on my hard drive and I know that I need to create recovery discs for Vista before I undertake anything like this. I like Vista. I have used Ubuntu on my previous desktops so I am mildly familiar with it.

An external drive might be rather slow specially if it is USB, it will depends on how you intend to use Ubuntu.

I would definitively prefer the internal HDs with One 10Gb partition for Ubunbtu, a swap partition your RAM *2 to *4, and the rest for the home dir.

But if you only intend to use Ubuntu for time to time an external drive should be OK as long as you recognize that it will be less responsive.

Its a laptop, right? Performance issues aside it wouldn't be portable. Partitioning the drive will be well worth the effort. Cheers!
