At the moment Skype is not supported and I haven't heard that it will be.

I think i read something about gaim supporting google talk soon (the lead dev got a job at google) but I could be wrong.

skype is proprietary, and they haven't released an API to let third party clients connect.

it'll never happen...

for phonegaim? hmm.. I dunno - I haven't looked too much but there is the source code so conceivably build a deb from it... I really am not that interested in it, otherwise I would have looked....... maybe look on google or something?

edit: there is a repository with some here: http://people.debian.org/~smimram/debian/
but I wouldn't take any chances - it may mess up the computer... here is the line that points there:

# gaim-vv / phonegaim
# deb http://people.debian.org/~smimram/debian/ unstable main

saw that on somebody's sources.list

I wouldn't take any chances with it, it's just easier to build source code than possibly kill your computer

edit2: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=57571 backports request for it.. OLD though

Since gizmo now has google talk support - if only IM - I suspect that google will open their voice protocol to everyone.

Note that supporting Skype was rejected by the team.

Phonegaim uses SIPphone as its back bone. If you wanna use SIPphone backbone and use IM to google (others in discussion ATM) i would strongly urge you to try Gizm http://www.gizmoproject.com.

It is IMO a much nicer interface and is very easy to use. It can also connect to other SIP open standard VOIP servers. Whch to me is a boon.

gizmo is nice.. I would use it if I could get the people that I know on skype to gizmo, which is not happening... one person depends on it for a podcast, three others are not too good with computers, and one has skype out, voicemail and maybe skype in..... so no lol..

skype is much better in my opinion, just because more people use it and it's slightly nicer... and has free 1-800 # calling, and more....

buuuuuuuut, skype's linux version isn't as good as the windows one..

what I want to do, is make linux software, then port it to windows, but make the windows version crippled just like the windows software is on linux... muahhahahahaha i'm so evil!

There is a Paltalk Plugin for Gaim, although it crashes Gaim a lot when in a Voice chat room.
