How can I verify if my RAID 1 is working?

Good day,

I have just installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS and have created a RAID 1 using 2 disks..

Now I would like to test it.. I know i can probably just disconnect my HDDs and reboot, but I am sure there is a command line tool that can do just that, there is no UI installed with the workstation.

Also... My 2 disks are slighlty different in size..
sda1 is 160GB and sdb1 is 250GB. Does that means i loose 90GB os storage capacity? I only createda 160GB partition on sdb1.
