HI
Trying to get XUBUNTU running on my old laptop. A Compaq Armada E500 700mghz PIII with 12gb and 256MB memory.

Tried normal and alternate cd loads and both have the same results. The install all works pops out CD reboots and then gets about 10% the way across on the progress bars and then stops and does nothing else.

Tried teh recovery option re-boot and the last messages reads
"realy_hotcpu_callback" and a load of numbers.

there is an end trace message after that.

then i can do nothing else but power off.

ANy ideas i really wanted XUBUNTU on this it seemed an ideal candidate and would give me a few more years with it and the kids could have used it.

just tried again and it now said "rc-default process (1561) terminated with status 139.

thanks for your help.
Rob.

I can't help on the error. I do think you should try DSL (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/)instead, even Xubuntu I don't think would run as well as you think on that hardware. It's a small download, burn and give it a try.

try debian testing xfce4 instead. grab the net installer:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-businesscard.iso

when you boot it select advanced then alternate desktops then xfce4 or lxde

i'm using the xfce4 on 450mhz 256mb ram, so you should be just fine.
when you get some experince under your belt go for a base install & build up from there with only what you want.

Losing the will to live here. If im not carefull ill have brain failure and go and buy a windows netbook.

Thanks
