I downloaded the PPC livecd from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/jaunty/release/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-powerpc.iso
and verified the download with MD5, burned at 1x, but it will not boot from my G5 when I hold the C key nor will it show up in the dialog to select a startup disk within OS X. What now?

Is it a PowerMac G5 or an iMac G5?
How did you burn it, did you use the Apple Disk Utility?
You should copy the .iso image - do not copy it as data but as image

It is an iMac. I burned it with Toast and I did burn it as an image as there were plenty of files and folders inside.

You shouldn't see any files when burning the cd as image. You should just see the .iso file. Are you sure you did it correctly?

Sorry, on the CD there were a few files and folders after burning the ISO. Is this what you meant?

Maybe you can try to burn the downloaded .iso file with the Apple Disk Utiliy (without mounting it).

I don't really know if that would make a difference, but I might try that sometime. Right now I'm away from my iMac but if I try that later I will give a shout about how it turns out.
