Is there a handheld MP3 player that has the most driver support/available software for Ubuntu.

I am leaning toward the iPod but wanted to see if there are any superior alternatives that are the most Ubuntu friendly...

I manage four iPods with Floola under Ubuntu and love 'em.

I'm partial to the dumbest music player available, as long as it shows up like a mass storage device, and can play all the widely used formats, I will give it a +1.

Thank you for the replies......

What are the apps used on Ubuntu or more generally Linux for the iPod?

I use Floola, but keep in mind the Touch is currently not supported.

Sansa and Sony Walkman also work in well in Ubuntu. Sansa even plays open source stuff like flaac and vog orbis.

You can load an ipod which also works well with amarok or gtkpod.

As long as it's not an iPod Touch, iPhone, or Zune, it should be fine.

I would highly recommend anything Sandisk.

Conduit can do some fancy syncing with portable players. Gpodder and most of the music players (Amarok, Songbird, Rhythmbox, Banshee) have some facility for syncing with portable players.

Stay away from the players mentioned by aysiu and older sony walkmans (use JSymphonic to load--similar to floola).

I giggle every time I see a Zune. Especially a brown, shiny one.

Any Rockbox-capable player. :D

I quite like the Toshiba Gigabeat F.

Get a Sansa (SanDisk). They're good for the price, and have more features than a similar cost iPod.

Thanks.

Sansa, Cowon and Samsung all have good alternatives to the ipod in their product line.
