upgrade 8.04 to 9.04 from CD

Hi All,
Need help to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04 which is on the CD from Linux magazine.
I have tried the Update Manager in System - Administrator but it only goes to the internet. I tried to use the CD but it only wants to format my harddrive or re-partition it.
There must be a way - for a new Linux user can do? I am running it on a Dell laptop xps m1730.with windows on one harddrive and Linux on the other one.

If it's supplied with a magazine it's most likely a live cd, which can't be used to upgrade an installed system. You'll need an alternate (text-based install) cd which you can download from the ubuntu website for that purpose. I assume this version (9.04) works fine for you and recommend that you install from scratch.
