This is really bugging me.

I am a programmer so I really need to be able to type " or '

I can copy and paste them... but that is such fun :)

What do I have set wrong?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 runnung Ubuntu 9.04

and one other things that bugs me, how do I change the Copy/Paste of
Terminal (Shell) from CTL-SHIFT-C/V to Highlight and Center Button Click?
I think that is xterm? I am very used to using Putty and it is set to use
the mouse buttons for copy/paste

Unusual problems. What keyboard do you have? Has it always never typed the quotes or just recently after an update? Is it just in one programme or terminal or across all? I've never had trouble with keyboards and linux, and I've used old and new alike. Do you have another different keyboard, and if you connect that one can it type the key?

I'm unsure what your asking at the second. By default, xterm is used in the gnome-terminal, so it supports the primary buffer paste (i.e. select then middle click to elsewhere) as do most Linux programmes in my experience. Is there a specific programme your using that doesn't?

It has always done this since first install, 8.10 I think

All programs

I will try another (USB) keyboard.

Accessories->Terminal - that shell

Maybe I need to do a fresh install...

No USB KB handy... Iĺl have to take it to work...

One other thing I remember, I was having trouble with the CD drive and ended up loading a very small install from the CD and did a Net Install.

While doing it I had selected a MOBILE version (maybe desktop-mobile??)

here is what my desktop looks like... it is different, maybe if I re-install
the right desktop (to make it normal) it will fix the other things...
