There's wink and istanbul but both have their own issues. Like for example, Istanbul won't record sound! If you turn on sound and try to record your system will freeze.

Yeah, I'd like to know what the OP's reason is too. Maybe it's a good reason and I'll be convinced to look for an alternative. Currently using recordmydesktop with gtk-recordmydesktop frontend.

Don't know it, if there is one. I've always just clicked on the icon in the tray to stop gtk-recordmydesktop from recording. Sorry I can't be of more help.
