I read somewhere (i can't remember where) that it was possible to encrypt the whole system drive, but one had to reinstall ubuntu. So, I booted from my Ubuntu CD, selected "install" but at no point did i see an option to use encryption, so I quit the installation at the final step (7) Since I saw little point in reinstalling it again, unencrypted.
Can someone help me out here please?

You cant install the system like that from a live cd. You need to download and use the Alternative installer.
