I need a phone mainly for talk, text and its ability to sync well with Gmail and Google calender. I don't want a contract and am planning to buy the phone, then get a pre-pay sim card. I would prefer to rarely use 3G and set the phone up to sync only when it detects an open Wifi connection.
Currently I am looking at the Pre or otherwise the upcoming Samsung or HTC with Android.I will never get a microsoft or apple product.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of a similar situation?

I don't know where you are, but currently in the USA the Palm Pre is only available as a CDMA phone locked to a specific carrier. In other words, no unlocked sim card Pre available yet.

I would say wait for the HTC Hero or get a G1 and when the Sense UI is unlocked load it up on the phone.

Oh wow, I want that HTC Hero. I wonder if they'd ship to the USA. The price is a bit shocking, though...
