It's not from hackers, but its origins aren't even exact since it's rumored to come from Warcraft or Warcraft II but I have never seen such thing in those.

(For those who don't know, Warcraft and Warcraft II were two games made by Blizzard 9-10 years **before** World of Warcraft existed. It is not a sequel to WoW!)

The 'p' is right next to the 'o' on a keyboard. Thus, the misspelling of 'own' came to be 'pwn', so IMO it should be pronounced the same, just converted to interwebs txt speak.

I thought ppl started typing "pwn" instead of "own" because, back in the day, certain counter strike servers would auto-ban you for typing "own" or "owned." It was a way of bypassing the filter.

I dunno, that was back around '99-'01 or so.
