View Full Version : Running shell scripts at window events?

Hi everyone, first time ubuntu (and linux) user here, I was wondering if there was any way to configure gnome ubuntu to execute a shell script at certain window events.

Basically I'm trying to run a script that renames the .desktop folder to something else, say .desktop_temp, and renaming a different .desktop_number into the .desktop, whenever the workspace is changed. So, effectively, this would give my (4) workspaces different items on the desktops to distinguish them better, instead of having the same hodge podge of stuff available for every desktop. As far as I have seen, this was not possible to do with gnome, so I thought of manually implementing this simple script instead. (Of course, if anyone has a better solution to having multiple desktops, I'm open to that as well, hopefully without the need for compiz, as I'm not sure my graphics card will be able to handle it)

Any help would be appreciated.
