One week on from installing Ubuntu on my new HP Mini and I'm still having sound problems. I can get sound out of the headphone socket but not the build in speakers. I have tried countless solutions that I've found on this and other forums and none of them have worked. I've been tinkering so much that I fear I might have ruined my chances of changing anything on this installation. I was thinking of reinstalling Ubuntu, but this would be inconvenient, so my question is this: is it possible to quickly purge all ALSA / sound related files and start afresh?

If this fails and I do decide to reinstall Ubuntu, should I use an older, stabler version? I'm on Jaunty right now, and I've heard several people complaining that they had sound problems in Jaunty but not in other versions. What will I be missing if I downgrade?

As always, thanks for reading and thanks for your support.
