My dvd drive works, I can burn dvd's cd's etc... I can also read and play movies that have been burned in movie player. When I put in a "real" dvd that was bought at the store it reads it and displays the name of the dvd but will not play it, it says error reading source. I have tried a number of programs, acidrip, dvd shrink etc... and none of them can read the dvd's. I don't even care about ripping or burning them for now but I want to be able to put a dvd in my drive and watch it on the computer. I was wondering if anyone knows why other dvd's work but store bought ones will not play. thanks!

If you have not already, you may need to enable the Medibuntu repositories to be able to play those DVD's.
Follow the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Have you tried Medibuntu (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu), and installing ubuntu-restricted-extras?
