No matter what i do i can't switch my DE. I've tried a plethora of commands from installing ubuntu, to installing the gnome desktop enviroment but it's not installing. I don't want to have to go burn the ubuntu cd and then install ubuntu. I thought that one could just switch DE's on the fly but that semes nigh.

You can't switch DEs on the fly. You have to log out, choose the appropriate session, and log in to the new session.

What is it you trying to do in XFCE that you'd rather do in Gnome?

Hi,
U can choose your session on the log in screen. If you cant find gnome there then goto synaptic package manager and search for gnome and checkout gnome and install it.Then logout and choose your gnome session.
Cheers....
