I already have built it on my desktop, but would like to try it on my laptop without having to install Ubuntu and compile all over again!

Try Remastersys (http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/remastersystool.html) to create an iso image of your desktop, and install it on your laptop

I had thought of that, but will it actually use GnomeShell as the default DE? I have never used Remastersys before.

is not ready yet to everyday use, but is nice, smooth, and feature-less :)
