Trying to install ubuntu 8.04 onto an ancient (I mean 600 mghz 190 meg ram VAIO laptop) just doesn't work...

After the "Initializing Linux Kernel" message I get a black screen with a flashing white underscore cursor mark in the upper left corner...

Then after a few minutes of frantic disc-spinning the disc drive stops dead in its tracks and I'm left with a flashing cursor...

I would like to breathe some new life into this thing but if this doesn't work it won't be very good for my faith in ubuntu xD

Laptop name: PCG-FX101

Please help :(

Believe it or not, Ubuntu doesn't do everything. Those specs IMO are far too low to run the GNOME desktop, in fact, I'm pretty sure Ubuntu stipulates to 256MB as a requirement and a faster CPU (probably something in the 1Ghz range).

Since you like Ubuntu, my first recommendation would be to try Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) and see if that's light enough for the ol' girl. If not, I'd say try something even lighter like Puppy (http://www.puppylinux.org/) or DSL (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html) (Damn Small linux).

Try them in that order and see which can work for ya. Best of luck.

Honestly not worth the effort, I'll just wait until I have enough time to work on and/or permission to screw with a decent pc :)

Thanks anyway :/
