View Full Version : [ubuntu] 9.04 No speaker sound, but headphones work!

I purchased a new laptop on Saturday (HP Pavilion dv3510nr) and have been having issues similar to others, it seems, with sound under Jaunty after recent updates.

However, strangely enough, sound works through my headphones (headphone output jack 1 of 2), just not through the laptop's speakers (or headphone output jack 2 of 2).

Here's what I get when I query for sound cards in my machine:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Any ideas for how I could resolve this?

EDIT: Almost forgot that I hear sound through the speakers just fine when I boot Vista instead of Ubuntu.

I have the same problem as you do (my laptop is a dv3500 HP).

I don't mean to bring up an old thread but your problem never got solved and maybe this way both our problems can be solved.

Worse comes to worse I'll upgrade to 9.10 but that may not solve the problem either (hopefully though it does).

yusuf@yusuf-laptop:~$ aplay -l

Looks like our hardware is the same, no?

Any ideas? At the beginning of 8.04 I had serious sound issues but later it resolved itself. I thought this would be the same for 9.04 but apparently its not ( or at least not yet).
I've tried many sound solutions on this here Ubuntu forum. None have worked for me so far....

Please do help :/

Installing the new alsa driver didnt fix anything.
Still only headphones working not actual speakers.

@Ulysses361,

My sincere thanks!!
My laptop speakers work now!!! (loud and crisp )
A problem I've had for more than 4 months now :D

May I know how you found the solution on the net?
I googled everything possibly related to my problem and was not able to locate that from launchpad.

Once again, thank you so very much.
I took a long time to reply because I had work to finish and I just got back from University today.

EDIT: To summarize how I did things in case someone with a similar case and laptop has this problem, this is what I did:
I went and downloaded the new ALSA driver according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure.
THEN, I went to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/78023 and followed Mark Rijckenberg's solution (post number 4).
In case it(solution) ever gets removed and this problem still exists, this is what Mark said to do:

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

3. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

4. reboot and retest sound

5. If sound still does not work, then replace hp-dv5 with one of the following 4 model options:

STAC92HD71B*
ref
dell-m4-1
dell-m4-2
dell-m4-3

6. You will have to reboot and retest sound after every model option change to the alsa-base.conf file

See

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/75353

for more info.

Regards,

Mark

After two updates, I've lost all sound.

None from the headphones or speakers...
I'm at a loss.
