Need to reinstall on dual boot xp machine

I have messed up my ubuntu install. Can I reformat the ubuntu partition and do a clean install without messing up xp? Do I need to get rid of grub before I can reinstall?

You can reinstall to the same partitions as you did originally. No need to format beforehand nor remove grub.

Just remember not to choose "use entire disk."
