Spore Creature Creator

I don't like the Spore game in general, but the Creature Creator is a nifty tool that allows my imagination to run wild without me needing to know anything about modeling software.
I noticed that the full CC is 5 pounds from the EA site, but I am afraid of buying it from there because I don't know if I'll be able to install it more than once (or I won't be able to reinstall it after a year). Am I right, or are my fears unfounded?
What happens when I buy it from EA? Do I get a serial number or a special (unique) installer with the serial number embedded inside it?
Finally: can I play this on Ubuntu without any cracks whatsoever?

The demo has no copy protection, the full Creature Creator has it. It's a web-based serial check.
