Finally, I convinced my dad that I will never use windows again, and he finally said "Your loss" (Yeah right!). I wish I had done this in a vm so I could show you the carnage! (Well nothing really too much to see....) And I am very very pleased to announce that I am now 100% windows free ^.^.

Remember... It's like giving up smoking.

One little sniff and you could go running back.

Right, except that smoking is actually bad for you.

Funny that, whenever Windows dies on peoples machines the recovery tool I tend to dig out is my ubuntu live cd ;)

Meh, I'm talking about games like GTA: San Andreas, and Halo 2. I don't have a good PC, it's a laptop from 2004, so wine isn't really a choice, I need Direct X and best drivers I could possibly have.

Wow..... err.... Get a desktop from your local computer store, and get a desk (if you don't have one.) That may fix your problems.

What IGP does it have?

Now matter how much I love Ubuntu I can't get rid of Windows, not yet anyways. Maybe one day there will be enough support for Ubuntu to where I can finally get rid of Windows. Mac is starting to get that kind of support. We shouldn't be to far behind.

Yeah, I still dual-boot at the moment. I'm not really a gamer, but I need ******* for iTunes for my new iPod, and to run some Windows programs, and sometimes I actually use Windows for normal things. And if ubuntu does something bad, I have backup. Although it may be crappy backup, it still just barely works.

How well does that chip run GTA:SA?

How well does that chip run GTA:SA?

I get as low as 20 FPS when I have six stars, and I'm spawning things like crazy, and it's just a big mess.

If I'm just driving around or whatever, I get 40+ FPS.

Blood//Stain//Child

20-60 FPS with default settings.

On the lowest I get 30-80 FPS.

Resolution?

Resolution?

I always have it set on 640x800 32 bit. But my resolution is 1280x800 (my graphic card stretches the game to my resolution, so it's not a tiny box)

If I use 1280x800 resolution in the game, I get 10-30 FPS. Which just isn't worth it.

My Radeon X1250 IGP gets about 10-30 FPS @ 1280x800, and that is a considerably more powerful chip than your 9100!

Do you use itunes for just inserting songs onto your ipod? Or for buying songs and inserting. There are plenty of tools for that and for linux too.

Because I have this mod that increases your FPS by ALOT! It's the streams.ini file converted from the PS2 version of the game for PC. I can get you a link, it's a MUST HAVE. :D

One of those tools is virtualbox. I'll never understand why people feel the need to have a seperate install. Unless of course, you are a gamer or don't have the horsepower to run vbox.

Glad you got away from it. My method was to not tell my dad, and if he finds out I'll just say "you've been telling me I needed a new one, so I figured I'd run linux on this computer."

Yeah! I use Windows XP! :D

Just move it in your GTA: San Andreas installation folder, and it should ask you to replace the file, say YES, but i suggest you back it up first just in case.

Nice one!

My laptop obviously came with Wind0ze Vista, and I was eager to have Ubuntu on my laptop, but my wi-f wasn't working. But I installed 8.10 over Wind0ze, and now it's windows-free :D

I also nearly convinced my mother to use Kubuntu - she said that although it looked like Windows Vista, she thought Kubuntu was a lot cleaner than vista. She said it was lovely.

Once I get enough money to buy CrossOver Linux, I will see if my mum has a few more thoughts about using Linux on her laptop.

Good! You never have to go back. I would keep a win VM handy if you can, though, for those 'ah crap' moments when you need a win app. If your machine is fast it's not worth the hassle to roll the bones with Wine. Also learn to stay away from lexmark and anything thats advertised as an "all-in-one"

Never Look Back :)
