What happened to the word "program?" Am I the only one who is annoyed with all the apple cronies saying "app" all the time?

Personally, I refuse to use "app" in that sense. Ugh... :p

To be honest, I don't know what happened. To me, "program" is a general word which can refer to both system software and applications, while "application" refers more to getting the computer doing some real work.

And whoever said that a Mac wasn't a PC (personal computer)? (No, I don't have one but have used a Lisa)

I use application more often, because Americans always make a comment about the ker-razy way I spell programme, and it gets boring after the first few hundred times.

Well in thew Windows world they are called programs, but in the non windows world applications is more common.
Its not a fad, just a different mindset.

Here is the wiki approach to the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_program
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_software
Plus there is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_software

The REAL reason? "App" is easier to say and write than "program". :D

I just hope people don't start using it as a verb.

Coder 1: Hey man, have you finished apping your app, yet?
Coder 2: Nah, I had to de-app the old-app before I could app the new apps for the app.

[Shudder.]

No linuxers refer to them as apps too.

Do you go around saying "there's an app for that?"

Well I do sometimes actually.

i think using 'app' would be more applicable to use, less letters and i think serves as an abstraction to whatever software is called, like program and binaries...

i mean, wouldn't it be weird call a 'webapp' as 'webprogram'?

Would calling utilities "utes" be too confusing for those who drive vehicles known as "utes"?

Good point. You are officially pardoned for using the term application ;)

Part of my annoyance with the term application is my background in management. In our little world, application has a very specific meaning. If there is an idea (or whatever), an application is a way to use the idea, which comes from its base: to apply. It is not the idea itself. So that's why I'm beginning to wonder if my ignorance is leaving me behind in the changing definition of words. But then again... People rarely use the words "state," "country," and "nation" correctly either (which, I must admit, also irks me). Ohh, and incorrect use (read: use) of the term "Nation-State" causes me to lose pretty much all respect for the political knowledge of the speaker.

However, in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter. They use the term, and regardless of my position, I understand exactly what they mean.

btw... I've called programs "proggies" for several years now ;)

No worries. I don't think they use computers there anyway.

especially since i'm pretty sure the term was coined by Steve Wozniak to describe Apple computers

I use program, applicaton doesn't sound right, and app is just odd.

To me, "application" doesn't relate to software. I guess you could say it's a way to "apply" your computer's abilities to do a certain task, but that's something of a stretch. Some people use "application" to refer to a suite of programs, but I just use "set," "suite" or "environment," depending on how interdependent and/or closely-related they are.

On the other hand, the term "applet" comes naturally to me for some reason. I guess I'm just crazy. (Didn't even occur to me to say "proglet" until about 30 seconds ago.)
