Question 1
I installed 8.10. Because 8.10 won't allow me to use my preferred screen resolution (1280x1024), but only a maximum of 1024x768, I replaced the xorg.conf with an earlier one (I think 7.10). I can now run in 1280x1024.

Yesterday I installed the KDE desktop. It booted in 1024x768 but I was able to change it to 1280x1024, and it displayed correctly.

But when I logged out, the login screen was in 1280x1024, but my display was only 1024x768, so I could not see the whole screen at the same time, but I could move it about with the mouse to see the other bits. When I logged in again the main screen had this same issue.

I went back to the screen settings, which were on 1280x1024. I changed them to 1024x768, and then back again. Everything appeared correctly again in 1280x1024... until I logged out, whereupon the login screen was as described above.

So, it seems I can set 1280x1024 up correctly in KDE, but the setting is incorrectly saved giving the issue described.

If, from the login screen with the issue described, I log into Gnome, the 1280x1024 resolution appears correctly. When I log out I am back to the same issue in the KDE login. Rebooting without first logging out doesn't help.

In a separate installation KDE runs fine in 1280x1024 in PCLOS.

Question 2
How can I now get my Gnome login back?
