hey everyone

me and my brother always have huge long "discussions" about whether linux or windows is better. I argue that linux is more stable and secure, not to mention faster, and its FREE. he says that windows is better, and it shows because it has 90% of the market. i answer that (and i know this shows my limited knowledge of linux) that there must be SOMETHING good about linux if google uses linux for 100% of its servers. plus, they sell commercial games and stuff for linux and linux is sold on new computers....and the companies wouldn't do that unless they were sure they were gonna make money. anyway, what i want to know is if there is a site which shows statistics that linux is faster, more secure, etc, plus any arguements you can supply that'll help me.
thanks

Google is blocked on your computer? You shouldn't be bickering about which OS is better, in that case, you should be arguing about censorship instead. :P

lol srry i guess i could have googled these myself. i got some great sites tho, so thanks a lot. just one more thing...he insists that windows xp is the best OS ever made. its hard to argue with that. the only things i can think up are stability (which he argues isn't true) security, and the fact that its free. he says that everything, all hardware and programs, just work with xp. is there anything i can say to that??

oh, and also, is there any sites that show actual statistics of linux be faster than windows xp?

I dont know if Ubuntu (Linux) is faster than XP or not, but I know even the most lavishly equipped Linux distros demand no more resources than Windows XP. And they are FREE!

For most Windows OS's that have reached the end of life, have a look at this page (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx)

thanks, ill use those things. But i already know its impossible to convince him :) the thing i find most annoying is that he assumes linux is terribe because of a few things he had go wrong with kubuntu. He also assumes that all software for linux is just cheap knockoffs of windows software, because profit companies such as windows are driven by competition, but the open source world has no competition according to him. and thats why he thinks linux/open source software will never be as good

Let tell you something about economics: monopoly is not competition.

Why is it nobody ever wants others to help them "in"? Why is it always "out"? What is so great about "out" that everyone wants everyone else to help them with it? And for that matter, where is "out" and how did it get there? Who put it there? And what were they thinking?

Just because something has 90% market share doesn't mean its better.

Personally, I don't think that one OS is better than the other. They all have their places. Saying that one is better is a matter of opinion. That can't be proven. But it is a fact that Linux and Unix-Like OSes are more stable than the current versions of Windows on today's hardware, but, as always, there are exceptions.

For your brother.

Can windows run on a potato?

http://www.bbspot.com/News/2008/12/linux-on-a-potato.html

How about an Ipod?

http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/index.shtml

Maybe we can install windows on PS3?

http://psubuntu.com/

I kno, we will run windows natively on mac! not.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPC

I got it! Here's 5000 dollars! Now we can run windows for the next 10-20 years until we figure out we are cattle, subject to a monopolizing operation system bent on a failed attempt to surpass unix.

or...

we can all download our FREE multiple choice; operation system instead of going to best buy, and not have to worry about *** loads of drivers and BSOD's. your call.

I don't see the point in arguing. You both probably have perfectly valid views in one way or another. But, neither of you need to argue with one another, that's the foundation of zealotry on both sides. Live and let live, if he doesn't want to use linux, he doesn't have to.

but windows isn't really a monopoly if it has competitors like apple. and still, it has to STAY on top, which is a big motivator. plus obviously making money motivates them

I'm not arguing with you! I've enjoyed your posts very much , I'd like to offer another opinion. After installing all the things necessary to run XP safely , Such as a hug foot print anti-viral program , third party firewall and cleaning and privacy applications and all the third party driver software control applications not to mention the immunization applications like spybot and spyware blaster and if your not much into the tweaking aspect you've left the indexing service which is absolutely horrible performance wise , well you have a clunky , slow one legged crippled OS and then just after you get it all locked down BOOM! Windows update blows out your video driver and you now have service pack BSOD.

Ubuntu is faster in my opinion , Now A base XP install without all of this jazz is lighting fast... before you catch Zlob that is and then......

You get the point.
