I put Ubuntu on an old PC, but niether my copy of 9.04 or 8.1 completed the installation (the error5 about bad disk and whatnot came up both times as it did once in a while on other machines). I made an 8.04 disk and the installation went just fine (I am posting this from my Ubuntu 8.04 machine). I got all of the updates that were available and I expected to see an "Upgrade" button now under Update Manager, but it isn't there. I remember that being how I upgraded from 8.1 to 9.04 on a different machine. How do I get from my fully updated 8.04 Ubuntu to 8.1 and then 9.04 without a fresh install (since those disks don't work on this machine)?

First go to System ==> Software Sources, and change the Release Upgrade in the Updates tab to Normal.

Bear in mind you will need to update to 8.10, then to 9.04. Depending on your system it may be quicker to just reinstall from a 9.04 disc.

Download and make a liveCD of 9.04, Test it out first to see how your system specs react to the changes of versions.

I agree ... sometimes a fresh, clean install is faster. Maybe better also.
