There are free alternatives, like aMsn, pidgin, mercury, etc.

Yep, that or some folks have got it to run under Wine.

i executed the msn app using wine, but nothing happens.

Just use Pidgin. It's easy and simple.

at the moment msn 8.0 and msn 9.0 are flagged as garbage (= they dont work) at winehq (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=11389)

So for now you cant use the microsoft's client

amsn works perfect including video and sound in fact my wife prefers it to msn on her windows box.
