The last Ubuntu LTS release goes unsupported as of 2011, but the last Kubuntu LTS release goes unsupported as of October 2009? How the hell is that "Long Term Support"?

Because there is no server version of Kubuntu

IIRC Kubuntu 8.04 was not an LTS release due to the timing of KDE 4

No confusion. The Kubuntu team announced when 8.04 was coming out that they decided that Kubuntu release would not be an LTS, because of the inclusion of the KDE4 remix

I believe the reasoning was that since kde 3 was on its way out the door it would have been impossible to provide long term support for something that would be abandoned before 2011. Which is why Kubuntu 8.04 is not an LTS

Because kubuntu 8.04 was never considered an LTS release since they introduced 2 versions of kubuntu. The last kubuntu LTS was 6.06, while ubuntu's was 8.04.
