which one? and why?

January 20th, 2006, 12:53 AM
Mine is vehicle..well...a cycle. Yes I know a pedle bike is not a car but its my form of transport.
Reasons:
I live 2 miles from Uni, and work from home, why the hell would i need a car.
Cars polute and are nasty....nah im kidding i could not care less its just im cheep!
Sitting at a desk most days means that getting 4 miles of cycling a day is just what i need! I can get to uni in 15mins on my bike, 20mins in a car because of city traffic, so im nimble!

curuxz, you're not alone ;) ... I just can't afford a car, yet if money did not matter, I'd buy a BMW, preferrably the Diesel Edition (120d) from the new series 1.

even dealer poked fun at me when i bought it.

Saab 9-3 Combi Sport wagon, just got rid of our Land Rover - could not stomach those gas bills or what we were doing to the environment any longer.

I gotta say this - my switch to Linux has had an overall effect on my entire lifestyle, I am much more aware of my actions and their "ripple effect" within my community... it's like a slap in the face back to the ideals I was concerned with in college but forgot about after i got into the "real world". Read into that what you want, but it's an honest attempt to admit that I had strayed away from my ideals, and I'm trying to get back to my core beliefs.

Public transport all the way. I'm against having cars unless absolutely needed.

Although I prefer not having to drive, the dutch public transport system is so bad, that it is simply not an option for me. If I lived nearer to my work I would use a bike, but 50kms is a bit too far for me.

Anyhoo, I drive a 1996 Mitsubichi Colt. It is small but spacy, economical and you can weld the bonnet shut, because it never breaks.:) The only downside is that is not very fast.

Built 305...now thats an oxymoron :p...anemic POS they are.
I couldn't manage more than 300 out of them without breaking things....Hope you don't take offense...just not a big 305 fan.
but sounds like a nice car I liked those novas.
I've lost most interest in cars now though, spend a lot of time bumming rides. When I must drive myself, I have an old lifted ford ranger that I swapped an old mustang 302 in it....talk about a nightmare on the wallet and fuel! :p...it's fun but is a work in progress that I didn't feel like finishing so it's missing certain things like mirrors, tailgate, and all guages except fuel. But hey, the drivetrain is brand new and cost a pretty penny :p.

A 1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe. I seldom drive on Interstates and that car is good for moving around in traffic. It's a 5 speed, gets 30 miles to the gallon and has a moonroof. Plus, it's paid off.. It does have 112,000 miles on it.. I'll probably have to get a new car eventually.

You could easily get another 50 000miles out of it. My '96 civic is current just over 266000km (166000miles) and still going strong.

I also am against car ownership, and believe it is time for each individual to start being accountable for thier own choices in life. If you choose car ownership you have no one to blame but yourself for the resulting actions of global politics that fossil fuels bring upon modern man.

I'm all for using our fossil fuels as fast as possible. When they run out, it will force us to use something better. Global warming is just a natural flux in the earth's climate IMO as well. As for the politics, it's not a big deal IMO. If it weren't oil, it would be cheap labor, food supply or something else. So I guess I'm all for multiple car ownership. :-\"

Yes the world has been getting naturally hotter over the past few hundred years, as it is always heating up and cooling down. But over the past 50 years there has been a huge increase due to human influence, if this increase continues at it's current rate, most of Africa will not be habitable, we will lose the corral reefs causing huge changes in the atmosphere, over 12,000 species will be wiped out, half of the UK and many other countries will be flooded and the USA will suffer effects like the New Orleans destruction on a regular basis. The world will not be the same again.

I drive a Volkswagen Golf Mk III CL (1.9 diesel), it has 340.000 km (which translates to about 200.000 miles), from 1997 to 2006. It never failed, and probably will double that without ever having a major problem. It's not the fastest car in the world, but it gets the job done, and pretty well at it. It's a comercial van, which I use to transport my two dogs around (for our great walks at nearby forests, beaches and such).

My wife drives the ****** version of the VW Golf, a 1.4 Comfortline VW Golf, from 2002... with 15.000 km (around 10.000 miles). It's probably just a little faster than the other one, but it SWALLOWS gas (compare 7 liters of diesel per 100 km on the hardcore VW to the 10 liters of gas for the softy).

And we're both not that easy on the pedal, either hehe

Mine can get to 170/180 km/h (110 mph), hers can reach 200 km/h (125 mph) at times, but we mostly travel on my Golf rather than hers (diesel is way cheaper, and it gobbles less fuel as well), normally at around 160 km/h (100 mph) when on highways. Hers is all electronical, a/c, electric windows and the like, mine is pure vehicle :P (not even radio, let alone electric windows).

I wish I had a MINI Cooper S - ragtop preferably, but I'm not that picky. ;)

I also am against car ownership, and believe it is time for each individual to start being accountable for thier own choices in life. If you choose car ownership you have no one to blame but yourself for the resulting actions of global politics that fossil fuels bring upon modern man.

Damn as soon we talk about cars environmentalists jump out.
a) You are off topic
b) Cars are hardly the only (and not even the leading) cause of polution. Just think of a single plastics production plant and the chemicals they use.
c) Just because someone has a car doesn't mean that they are poluting, they could drive a Hybrid (which happens to be pretty bad for the environment cuz of the electrical), or a hydrogen car (745hi as an example) that produces nothing but water, it could also be biodiesel that incidentally produces glycerine and something else that is comepletely harmless to the environment.
d) Public transport is not always feasible. I live in NYC that has probably the best public trans system in the country and there are still plenty places where busses stop running at a certain time or run once every hour/half hour, not everything has bus/train going there. For instance if you got to Staten Island there are almost no busses.
e) Fossil fuels are used for more than gas, plastics, certain rubbers, alot of chemicals are derived from crude oil.

Saying you are against car ownership is ignorant at best. There are plenty of completely feasible ways of running a car w/o gasoline. The best way would be hydrogen as you wouldn't need to modify the current design at all to use it. There is also biodiesel, which basically recycles old fryer oil, however diesel engines are slow to rev.

My next door neighbors have two PT Cruisers and one just sits in the garage! I've never actually seen them drive that one... I just don't understand... Of all cars... PT Cruisers... No offense or nothing. I just don't really like those cars, haha.

I wouldn't be surprised if the neighbors had a "show" car. No offense taken, there doesn't seem to be many folks in-between on Cruisers. Folks either love 'em or hate 'em . For me, it's very practical, but it still has some of the old street rod feel!

whats your budget ?

Subaru, Skyline, lotus elise...

My budget varies depending on the motor. For example I wouldn't spend more than £6K on an RX7, due to high ownership costs (motorists are ripped of in England). I'd stretch to £8K for an Elise, as it has simple mechanics and lower ownership costs (depreciation is also lower). For this money I could build a great little Lotus 7 replica (Tiger Cat), but I need a car that can be used in any weather (running 2 cars is a real hassle).

I don't fancy 4x4's or saloons, but saying that I do admire the Skyline for it's amazing performance. I was at Alton Park in a Caterham doing about 120mph and one passed me as though I was parked - very impressive!

Yeap, 94 was the last year they made this model. New models look bloated to my taste. Mine is "convertable" - blue top. But I'm not so lucky in terms of total cost of ownership. I already have had to change water pump and evaporator. Both parts were relatively cheap, but it took whole day to change them at the rate of $70 per hour... Now something blows out the fuse, so my powerlocks quit working. The good thing is that people are nice around here, so I do not have to lock my caddy too often.

At 94,xxx miles now I dont expect the water pump to last alot longer, I figure depending on where I am when it goes I will try to replace it myself to avoid some labor

I should have mentioned I think my A/C is toast. Need to add refregirant but the dang thing uses R-12 which is $80 a lb here, and I would need several pounds to fill the system. This sounds funny, but I will fix the A/C with R-134 or something when the temp cools off, 100+ degreees in TX isnt car repair friendly. My cost of ownership will go up soon once I repair the A/C, and the shocks.

Heh, I would have been a bit funnier for me had I not been late for class already for a test. I also had alot to do that day, I smelled the stupid maple syrup for hours and it had plenty of time to bake in the sun and release its fragrance.

What saved me though was my leather interor and the fact that they somehow missed the fabric parts, which really aided in cleanup

@ gui454... wow! cool truck! Thats gonna be a beaut when you get it finished. My work beater is an 82 Pontiac Parisienne that looks kind of like this. It is actually a lot more economical than you would think. Around 22 MPG, not bad for a 5500 LB car! Half hour highway commute to work with lots of transports and deer so I like a solid car. I also have a 2000 Focus ZX3 (wifes car), a 1971 Pontiac Firebird (father son project?) and 3 street motorycles. I don't ride the bikes much since we had our son. I have never heard of "flexcar" before. Cool idea! I don't know if it would work here or not though... people are too attached to their hulking SUV's. So you just borrow other peoples cars and they borrow yours? I don't think my old Parisienne would be too popular. LOL :D

the way it works is you belong to "flexcar" and when you need a car you reserve it online from a minute to a year ahead of time....

In my wallet I have a Credit Card like card that I place on the front window....this opens the door of my reserved car...

in the glove compartment is the key...in the sunvisor is a gas credit card if I need gas it is all included....also insurance...

I can get a very new vehicle for about $45 a day or $9 an hour......this includes unlimited milage...gas and insurance....

I pay very little....since I don't need a full time car....I usually take the subway to work...

there are cars as close as a block from my apartment building....and at every metro center in town

That flexcar sounds very cool... I think I'm going to look into it. I'm very used to walking everywhere, as I live a mile from just about anything you would ever need... although I do have a 20 year old Ford Ranger that I drive around in a very fuel-inefficient way. :) Not really into Ford, but it only cost me $600...

RandomJoe

I have three, in ascending order of preference:

My least liked (and unfortunately highest-mileage-driven) is a Ford E-150 van. Provided by work, and in spite of higher gas prices I can't convince them to replace it with something more fuel efficient at the end of the lease. In fact, it sounds like we'll be going to something even bigger and heavier next time! (V-10 "service vehicle" of some sort!) *sigh*

I own a 1998 S-10 pickup, thanks to the work vehicle I only have around 45k miles on it so far! Hope to keep it a LONG time... Doesn't do too badly mileage-wise, as around here most things are down the highway.

By my preferred ride is my RANS V-Rex recumbent bicycle (which is my avatar photo)! Ridden that thing many long miles in the past... Need to get back on it more now, been way too lazy lately.

when I lived on Portland, Oregon they had a free bike program. They had bikes all over the city, and when you needed one you would jump on it and go and when you were done you left where ever for someone else to use.

I don't know if this program is still active?

Well, in Roskilde, Denmark, where I live, they've really taken care of pedestrians and bicyclists. The city center is so difficult to drive through, that even though you're allowed to drive most places in there, almost everybody parks their car on one of the free parking places outside the city and takes the bus to the center. This makes for a nice and almost carfree city. When it comes to longer trips, being a student, I only pay haalf price when I'm taking the train and bus between cities. It doesn't really get any better than that :).
All I'm waiting for is for the politicians to outlaw private cars completely untill fuel cells and eco-diesel are the most common forms of fuel, but that's my own little utopian dream, that'll propable never com true :)

My bicycle got stolen some year back and as I don't really need one, I normally just take the bus or the train. I never owned a car and never quite figured out why I would want one of them dumb, dirty, large, expensive things anyway.

If you can, get the focus tdci, if you don't mind diesels, as good to drive as the petrol version with 40+ mpg

Might be bit hard to get hold of in the states mind, try a vw tdi instead.

yeah, i think the most efficient focus offered in the states is with a pzev engine, which still runs on petrol but to greater effect. i was eyeing the vw golf or jetta tdi, as those proclaim as much as 50 mpg. we'll see. :)

sadly, diesel is at a premium here (is it elsewhere? we're looking at about 40 cents more on the gallon), but even the mileage offsets the cost.

I always though diesel was much cheaper to manufacture than petrol ??? Is this because of government levied taxes ?

i'm guessing it's a taxation issue. i don't rightly know. (or it could simply be a fixed price, seeing as how fixing diesel probably stands to be very profitable when you consider that virtually all frieghters run on diesel...)

This post is a couple of years old now I know, but you really should drive a modern turbo diesel. My car is a Ford Mondeo (Taurus in the states). It has 130bhp, 0-60 in under 10 seconds and will do about 130mph. It is far from slow. The claims of 50+ mpg are not true on 18" alloys but 40ish are. I am certainly no environmentalist but under the current climate around fuel prices, you could do yourself a favour and save some money by getting a diesel. From my experience visiting relatives in Miami where I was informed that 18mpg is considered good, much savings to be made.

Steve.

I drive a 1995 Geo Metro 1.0 litre 3 cylinder. 45~ miles to the gallon @ 65 miles per hour.

Rather nice in the summer, as the AC is nice and cold, and while everyone's all stressed out trying to park their SUVs and such at the beach, I can *usually* squeeze mine into a motor cycle spot (with parking attendant's permission of course... im not that much of an ***) or some of the smallest spaces available to paralell park :D

To top it off, handles nice in the snow and mud and dirt roads in my area, is cheap to repair, and only cost me $750 so if it breaks down permanently, I won't really care. Been driving it for 3 years, and I'd say I've gotten my money's worth out of it :D

I'm not sure about your area, but diesel here is about 40 cents more per gallon than premium! That kills me too since it costs moderately to significantly less for refineries to produce diesel than it does premium (91 or 92 octane) pump gasoline (especially in California where emission laws are stricter than midwest or eastern states). I'd only get diesel if I wanted economy on something that required the power of a diesel motor. (like frequent towing or lots of climbing.)

Thanks, RRS! It'll sound a bit healthier when I replace the exhaust. Still running original pipes (1 7/8") There is a lot of backpressure right now after all the modifications I made. I'll be going up to 3" soon,

GTX's are nice! A friend of mine has one. There is a gathering of classic musclecars and old early 20-40's hotrods every Friday at a Sonic Burger in my town thats been going on for the last 15 years or so. I see it out there every now and again. The only mopar I ever wanted is a 70 Challenger. The new concept challenger makes me drool! Its modeling is so much truer to the original design than Fords new Mustang IMO.
http://www.parkparadigm.com/images/SMP/2006-Dodge-Challenger-Concept-SA-Top-1024x768.jpg

I'd hold on to that GTX if I were you. Its amazing how much dollar appreciation these old cars have been earning. I just saw a 68 Torino sell at auction for $58,000 that wasn't even numbers matching anymore. The nicer ones, like the Torino Talladega sold for almost $100,000. I think the only thing I'd ever trade my torino for is a 72 Ford Pantera! The body may have been Italian, but the rear engine powerplant is 100% Ford.

I had my first crash for running a stop sign, and even though the person that hit my back corner was speeding, I received complete blame. I was 22. She was 70. Never again, I said, and have been riding bike ever since, even through the darkest and coldest of nights.

Even after joining bicycle groups, I find much disillusionment over the lack of alliances with other alternative vehicles, namely motorcycles and skateboards. No one has been able to prove to me that skateboarders or motorcyclers carry worse connotations. They go through the same problems as pedal-bicyclists.

Then there's motorized bicycles, Segue scooters, horseback riders, mini-hybrids, mopeds, and people who build their own vehicles. The bicycle groups I know also support pedestrians and trains by default. In the United States, it will be difficult for bicycles to enter the free market legitimately unless trains are involved, a community is built from scratch, or traditional walking neighborhoods are marketed aggressively.

In Pennsylvania, people can pretty much forget about a job unless they have a car.
