View Full Version : [ubuntu] Installing Ubuntu onto an externally connected hard drive

June 23rd, 2009, 02:01 AM
I have an internal hard drive connected to my computer through a USB port and I am wondering how to install a fully-functional Ubuntu onto the drive as the only OS. There is nothing on the drive and I can drag and drop files onto it.

And if you're wondering, I am going to put the drive into another computer. And my current computer cannot write onto floppies.

Just use the Live CD installer. Just make sure you install Grub to the external disk. That option is on the last step (the one that has a text box summarizing your partitions). Click on the "Advanced" button.

I am slightly confused because this is the first time I have had an empty hard drive. Could you provide a link to a guide on how to do this or could you please provide steps for how to do this.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

instructions for a flash drive (http://beastie.cs.ua.edu/cs150/usb-install.html). They should be the same for an external hard drive
