My pc heats 40 degrees while running movie player or even when not running anything. Is that normal?

maximum of the most CPU's is 90°C, so 40°C is normal.

As lions said, nothing wrong with 40. Don't be afraid of CPU's melting down, it's practically impossible now given how the chips are hardwired to shut down as they approach critical. Your unlikely to get very cold at idle, unless you've a large efficient aftermarket cooler.

I know 40C sounds a lot compared to what it feels like in normal weather, but it isn't.

40 °C is a normal, even pretty low temperature.

My desktop used to be around 80-90°C all the time, until I replaced the heat sink (and cleaned it out the first time in a year)and it dropped to 45°C again.

When your pc gets too hot for it's own good, it will shut down by itself.

Um no.

Newer (hotter) CPUs have MUCH lower crit temps. On the AMD side for instance:

The late model 125W Athlons were 65C

The 95W PhenomIIs are at 73C

Do you get temperature changes ? If the temperature is always 40 degrees then it's possible that the sensor is not being read correctly (I've modified my PC with a separate, non standard, temperature controlled CPU fan and the reading is always 40 as the default sensor is no longer used).

My laptop has been idling at 40C for three and a half years. No problems. My desktop (after a 10% overclock) also idles at about 40C.
