Update Manager is giving Error

Dear All

I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed in my Fujistu Siemens Esprimo V5505 laptop.

I use at the work network. The work network is using a proxy server (the IP address is 10.20.1.23 and port is 8080). I can surf the web using the Firefox browser, but when I click the Reload button on the Synaptic Package Manager or the check button on the Update Manager I get the following error: Please Help me

I'm having the same problems with Hardy except in my case this is with the Australian repos.

If I change to the US repos, I don't appear to have a problem!?

Anyone???
