hi there

One of my friends just come to me with his external hard-drive. The external hard drive is 500GB and he was trying to convert from FAT to NTFS using a windows software(Paragon Partition Manager ).
All the process were running fine(no errors ) but now the hard drives is still FAT32 and a lot of directories are empty.

Do you have any idea about what can be done? What can we try to do in read-only mode, to recover his data?

Are those data lost forever?

You might try testdisk or systemrescuecd.

Check out PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec).

From the Wiki:

PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/) is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.
