i was looking around high end furniture store the other day, and saw some pretty slick speaker systems with integrated ipod docking station etc.

like alot of designer stuff... its just not that hard to make. I could spend the several thousand on it or i could also try to make something that looks similar for a few hundred. Does anybody know if somebody makes a open frame (electronics hanging out) ipod docking station that will allow for the extraction of analog ouput? or a USB reader that will decode the standard codecs, again analog output without the use of a full PC?

thanks for any help.

This docking station is only $12.99 - might as well buy one, rip it up and see what happens.

ok thinking about project...

if i use a SBC (single board computer) 3.5" maybe? running some flavor of linux, is there a good command line based media/cd player that will easily drive an USB or serial LCD panel?

I don't know about displays but I use ncmpcpp as my music player and it's great. It is a front-end for MPD that runs from the terminal and has tons of features.

Edit: Check this thing out (http://www.mini-box.com/picoLCD-256x64-OEM). Open source drivers, scriptable with Python and USB.
