I have a Toshiba 3110 CT laptop and the max memory is 196 mb RAM. It presently runs on Windows 2000, but someone suggested ubuntu. I download version 9.04 but that reqiures 256 of RAM and so it will not install. I wanted to get an idea of what ubuntu would be like on this machine rahter than just making the change. However, I am not even sure that ubuntu would run of this computer.

Any assistance would be appreciated. I am a reasonably knowledgeable computer person and upgraded the hard drive and install Windows 2000 on the new drive several years ago.

Ubuntu (meaning the full distro running on Gnome) will NOT run on your system without at least a ram upgrade, this is the quote from ubuntu.org about the recommended sys requirements:

Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

700 MHz x86 processor
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
8 GB of disk space
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
Sound card
A network or Internet connection

Note: All 64-bit (x86-64) PCs should be able to run Ubuntu. Use the 64-bit installation CD for a 64-bit-optimised installation. Now, I would not recommend using ubuntu for a system with those specs, Xubuntu is lighter:

You need 192 MB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte) RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAM) to run the Live CD or 128 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time. To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte) of free space on your hard disk. Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 192 (or even just 128 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM. You could try that one if you want, or go to distrowatch, and check other distros, there's DamnSmallLinux and Fluxbox, which I've used on older PCs without problems...

Thank you. I will look at Xubuntu.
