isnt bittorrent installed?
apps-->internet-->transmission?

did you install a default ubuntu-desktop?
If you dont see a program called transmission, you can go to applications-->acessories-->terminal

then type
sudo apt-get install transmission
press enter
it will prompt you for your password, and then you are done.

Check: Applications>Internet and see what you already have.

U already have transmission included in ubuntu... Works very well.

I did try to install bittorrent, but it is a command line version or something.. Tried also installing from .deb from the bittorrent site, but it didnt work either...
Anyways transmission does its job really well. Also u have Deluge in tha repositories. That is a good bittorrent client also.
