Hi there!
I have an HP laptop dv6385ea and can't find a detailed guide on how to install Ubuntu on it. I found this page (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=528618) on the Forum and printed out the 6th guide: Ubuntu on HP DV6636NR (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=575750) but I don't know whether it will suit my case.
Being a complete beginner I have some concerns regarding the installation process and Ubuntu software repositories.

1. Is there some kind of backup sync application such as SyncToy for Windows?

2. Is the guide I printed out, good for my laptop though the notebook models are different?

3. I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 but should I go for 9.04 instead? Is Jaunty Jackalope filled with bugs?

4. How much should I shrink Vista in order to make enough space for Ubuntu?
Local disk C: is 94.9 GB free on total 143 GB; HP_Recovery (D:/) is 1.19 free upon 5.15 GB total. I'd like animation effects (Compiz, right?), office and video editing applications, VoIP software (PidGin is optional), Mozilla web Browser and watching DVD/ .avi videos on Ubuntu.

Can you please help me?

That guide is rather old. First defrag Vista at least once or twice. Using Vista's disk management utility shrink the Vista partition by a minimum of 20 GB. Personally I would give it more because if you like Ubuntu you will find yourself using Vista less and less as time goes by. Then when ready use the Ubuntu Live CD to install Ubuntu. At the "Prepare disk space" window of the partitioner choose the "manual" option.

Make a backup of your data files. Although the partitioning and installation processes almost always go smoothly, there is always the chance something can go wrong. Do not get caught with your pants down and be the one whining on here that you lost all your data!

Before taking on the task of installing a new OS one should read & become familiar with what it is they are going to do. Here are a couple links to get you started:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition
http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html -for a downloadable pdf Ubuntu pocket guide which BTW has step by step instructions for the install process.

1. rsync or it's GUI version grsync
3.I would use 9.04, but 8.04 is fine
4. Compiz will work if your vid card is capable. Hopefully you have a dedicated vid card not an onboard (shared) vid card.

I'm going to read all the links you provided me with.
You're right about that guide being old and anyway my laptop has an Intel Core 2 duo T5600 1.83GHz processor, 2 GB RAM and WinVista Home Premium 32bit OS - it's rathar different from the HP dv6636NR.
Thanx a lot! Will come back if needed.
It's been over a year I've been toying with the idea of passing to Ubuntu.
