View Full Version : [ubuntu] Upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 kills X server

I just attempted to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04. The result is that the computer goes through the normal boot process and then the screen freezes, either blank or with *two* small "UBUNTU" logos on the top of the screen. The Xorg log signals no errors; it just gets to the end of the activations and stops. I am using an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop; there is no double boot nonsense to worry about. I can drop into root mode with networking; unfortunately, with no X windows, my browser is limited to Lynx (which has problems even beyond the "no graphics" limitations.

Suggestions and pointers would be *greatly* appreciated.

I can't stick a "Solved" label on this since I have no idea on earth why it started working, but it did. I tried to go back to 8.10, ran into some problems, upgraded again to 9.04, and then it worked.

Not solved, but it's working.
