Hello please advise me of a doc or tute explaining how I install and organise tar

You should already have tar installed. However, in many cases I find it simpler to use a GUI archive manager like Ark to deal with the back-end stuff for me. What exactly are you trying to do?

A little bit more of a description of your problem might help. i.e. "I have this file called myfile.tar.gz and I can't figure out how to open it!"
Here's a bit of a summary.
Tar takes a bunch of files and bundles them together into a single file. It can compress them too.
If you want to get all of the individual files out of a tar archive, open a terminal and do:
tar -xvf yourfilename.tar
