I've been trying the RC of Windows 7 and I really like the window snapping feature. I was wondering if Compiz could do the same thing (specifically the snap to half the screen - http://www.nirmaltv.com/2008/11/13/get-windows-7-aero-snap-in-vista/) If Compiz can't do it, are there any other Linux applications that can do the same?

Yes, something very, very close is found in Compiz

Alt + F2 then type ccsm then choose "window management", then "snapping windows".
It is not exactly like it is Windows 7 but it appears to me the whole idea of their snapping windows came from Ubuntu. Like I say, it appears to me!

Actually I found Group and Tab Windows under Compiz to be a 100% smarter idea....

Go to Youtube do a search for Group and Tab Windows....

Good Luck....

This Group and Tab Windows makes a 100% more sense , Because you can open a web browser and notes on the other side of the window do a cut copy and paste and never use to hole screen up...

Actually I don't like snapping windows to add to this discussion.... Because I can also view my Google gadgets and have 2 or more windows open at the same time...

Group or Tab windows doesn't use that much of the cpu or gpu to run...

I have a laptop so I keep an eye on heat.... And I have a laptop cooler...

later....

The possibilities are really endless! It's great! Oh and by the way "ccsm" is Compiz Config Settings Manager! Just accessed via alt +F2. I have no interest in the snapping windows myself! Just came stumbled upon your post. Have a good one!

I found a plug-in that's really similar to what I described. It's called Grid. The only thing it's lacking is the ability to use the mouse to drag it to an edge instead of a keyboard shortcut. I wonder, how hard would it be for me to add that? I know Compiz can already handle edge shortcuts...
