Configure custom screen resolution in 9.04

Hi,
Maybe I'm just plain dumb but how on earth do you configure custom screen resolutions in 9.04.

My problem is that my screens native resolution is not listed in the display settings GUI.

Back in the day, one could change the Display section in xorg.conf to whatever.

On my 9.04, the xorg.conf is surprisingly empty.

Also, what happened to displayconfig-gtk ?
