Ok Need ideas!!!

I got a laptop it has a windows Vista partition and an Ubuntu partition already.

I had Win7 installed but i wiped that yesterday! (Tried a Hackintosh but there's problems with sound and Networking!! so that's out!!)

Now i've got a 45Gb empty space and I'm wondering what to do with it!

Don't want to do anything boring like use it for a /home partition... lol!!

Anyone got ideas for another OS to try out?

Do like I did... Try running a linux box inside your linux box. Learn to compile things, work with the kernel.. That's what I'm doing with an extra 30gb of space I got. I got a 32-bit kernel of ubuntu to play with under virtual box using the space. :)

you can use it to test the most bleeding edge linux things
possibly for btrfs testing.. or you can help canonical test Karmic Koala ;)

So:

it looks like it's down to Karmic testing or FreeBSD.....^_^

or both... there's enough room!!

OS wise, try openSUSE, Debian, Slackware, Arch, Gentoo etc etc etc Try everything man =] take a stroll over to Distrowatch (www.distrowatch.com) and try out the top 20 =] Then top 30, 40, 50 =]

Or, you cud use the space to rip off some of ur favourite DVD's =]

I've noticed a tendency for data to grow to fill (exceed?) the available capacity, regardless of the care taken to keep it properly organized. There was a time when I would have been happy with 10-20 megabytes, these days I find myself thinking in terms of hundreds of gigabytes.

I'm curious why the OP wiped Windows 7 in favour of Windows Vista?! Windows 7 is so much faster, snappier, happier than Vista - and i never had a single issue with Vista so that's saying something!

I'd use your free space for files? Just a thought..

I'm happy with ~10 GB. I organize things compulsively, there is no clutter on my computer. Plus, we have a Samba share here which holds all of our music/photos/etc., but I don't think that matters since none of it came from me and I never use it anyways.

This leaves me with ~130 GB empty space on my drive.

I also reverted to Vista from Win7.

All versions of Windows 7 i've used have BSOD's on a daily basis.

It's not usable anymore for me. Vista never gave me any problems, so I'm using that again for my gaming needs.

I vlited a custom Vista version, it's faster than Win7.

Or... you could just sit back and revel in all that free space?

Free space annoys me when I know I'll never fill it.

lol!

Ok just tried the latest FreeBSD
that was a mistake! for some reason X-server crashed when trying lo load X-clock. Could not net network access so I could not download another Desktop. Also it wiped my grub bootloader and the bootloder it used refused to boot into windows or Ubuntu!
Subsequently I found that my windows install has been corrupted (not BSd's fault)

Anyhoo I found a Ubuntu boot disk and reinstalled Grub.

Also tried installing Karmic.....

That didn't go as well (or far!!) what ever option i picked the screen went blank! looks like it's not happy with Intel graphics at the moment.

So back to square 1 :D

I did the same thing. I liked 7, but it kept locking up on me. Also, when the trial period is over, we either have to buy it or revert back to Vista at that time. It's not like they actually gave us a free OS.

But about the original post. You could try out ReactOS or Open Solaris.
