What is your HDD temperature using ubuntu?

This heating problem kills me.. I am not asking for solutions here .. I wanna see other temps..

if you dont know how to get it do the following :


sudo apt-get install hddtemp

and to get the temp :



sudo hddtemp /dev/sda

change sda with what ever your hdd name
and please get the temp half an hour after you turn on your machine.

I don't install stuff like that, if I watch in the bios after rebooting, everything is around 40 degrees.

My drive is a steady 42c with a CPU temp of 47c

love having a laptop :D keeps my lap toasty and warm in the winter :D

Ok, desktop temps after 6h 32min uptime, under low load

Pentium 4 3GHz CPU - 36C
Mobo - 29C
Hitachi Deskstar 80Gb 36C
Samsung Spinpoint 26C

This is with two case fans, one at the rear, and a 120mm on the case side blowing directly down on the CPU and Mobo. Under full load, CPU never goes above 44C. Had been idling at 50C, and after 5minutes load would be at 65C, all the fault of a huge amount of dust clogging the heatsink. CPU fan used spin at 4500rpm constantly to keep the chip at 50C. After a good cleaning, sits at around 1K rpm at idle, going up to around 1600rpm under load. The 120mm fan stays at 1300rpm, while the rear fan is around 700rpm.

Planning on using two 50mm fans to suck air under the HDDs and out the front of the case :D

An airduster is probably the best investiment I've ever made :D

My drive temp is 29C at ambient temp of 69F, but generally runs about 31C. Im am a huge advocate of using desktops and keeping components cool. Thats said I get playfully mocked for having a little kids video game case "with blue lights and a disco ball". (Look for a case where the 120's run over the HDDs)....why should I have a hot case, just so I look like a "mature" adult? Sorry I will keep my gamers case ( holds fingers in the air at old farts).

I toss HDDs after 5 years of use and PSUs after 4. I always research all my components to factor in operating temps and will pass on the latest an greatest for a cooler running component. For example in video cards moving one generation to the next is a waste for me because no matter how much websites act like the newest video card is the best thing since HoHos, usually the price point and added heat isnt worth the performance increases only noticable in benchmarks. Generally I wait at least 2 generations before upgrading and wasting $200.

Over the years I have noticed that heat does kill components, and while designs take that into consideration more today then they did in the past, like Apple showed us a few years ago designers, at times, dont care if your out a few bucks, as long as they are making money. There was one video card, I think it was a 8600 GT that I almost took a hammer to after buying it, it was that insanely hot (they took it back). Unfortunately with the economy you cant take VC back like you use to, to test them out.

The best way to cool you system (in your case a HDD) besides a nice case is a good PSU and video card. My PSU is amazingly cool running and has helped a lot. I bought too much PSU with that efficiency tag they comp with now and it runs a good 20C less then my old, highly rated PSU. My Video card sucks though. One review blasted video card makers for being too hot (I have a 4850). I see the change in case temps when I play video games and I would hate to see this card in my old case. The Antec 900 case I have uses 120MM fans , and you can feel a draft (at lowest setting) with this thing! BTW dont bother with high speed 80MM fans. I went that route on an inadequate case and its not worth over clocking and having you compter sound like a server room from 50 feet away. Just drop the case in get a real case that only uses 120's and above....I also use a turig 120 Tower, again keeps the CPU very cool but a secondary effect is that I also keeps the case thus other compnents cool.

I wonder when ubuntu team are going to fix this issue ..! which is really not easy to understand.. to be honest .. I THINK ubuntu killed one of my HDD in My DELL laptop. and still I am stuck with it in the new laptop.

Would it help if I change my HDD in the laptop ?
its Western Digital .. and I noticed that it has the highst temps over other HDDs.

somehow, my HDD temp is 24 degrees Celsius (it has been idle for a long time, but it was active for 2 mins before i checked)

now it has been active moving a large file to different spot for some time and my temp went down to 22C!

EDIT: i installed that on my other computer with 2 drives, and the first drive ran about 27C and the second spiked at 39C (while copying a file between the two drives)

Well for a laptop 85 degrees celcius is about the max.

:D and i just found out that encoding a bunch of videos actually cools down my harddrives. Probably because the CPU's cranking up the fans while the HDD is not even under load

anyway, my HDD is at 37C when encoding videos, when it's usually at 39-40C when the computer's idle, and i never seem to put it under enough load (or at least for a long enough time) for it to go up beyond 40C

I've got some rather serious airflow going through the case. It's a coolermaster with a 120mm exhaust and an 80mm intake. The whole front is a giant mesh of steel. I also have a 120mm fan on my Dark Knight cooling stack.

And my GPU is down to 44C :D
