View Full Version : [ubuntu] Can I migrate all software and data to a new install?

Hi,

Could someone please advise me on migrating my Ubuntu partitions to a different HDD. I currently have partitions for "swap" (1Gb), "/" (15Gb) and "/home" (15Gb) on an HDD along with 2 NTFS partitions. I'd like to move Ubuntu to a dedicated 80Gb HDD if possible.

How would I transfer or install all the drivers and apps which I currently use? Is it sensible to do a fresh installation on the 80Gb, then transfer /home and the APT files from /var/cache/apt to the new installation? I don't want to have to re-download all the packages again.

I'll also have to figure out how to point my OS and software to the new partitions.

Thanks for any help!
