I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my new HTPC and for a few days it worked just fine. But then suddenly when I was starting up it froze just after displaying "Starting up...". If i boot into recovery mode or remove quiet splash boot options, the freeze occurs after "[0.xxxx s] io scheduler cfq registered (default)" is shown.

I have tried several other boot options such as noacpi, noapic, clocksource=jiffies etc, and also tried upgrading the kernel to version 2.6.30, but no go. If I have a usb-stick with the livecd on it however, it boots just fine, with a small delay after the "Staring up..." message.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
