View Full Version : Percentage of Linux/Unix based machines world wide?

Hi all,

I had a bitt of a ](*,) moment this afternoon when I was discussing the pros and cons of Linux over Windows (never battle I know, another place another time!).

Basically it boiled down to this comment from him:

As soon as (Major Australian Defence Contractor) uses Linux and it becomes a MAJOR OS that lots of people/companies use, I'll switch my home PC too.

Now as I work in the Air Traffic Navigation Industry I can safely say that all the air traffic over Australian airspace (11% of the Earth's surface) is handled by a network of machines all running Linux/Unix.

So in response I said that Linux is in use much more than he thought. To which he replied

By Who? I haven't seen any companies I deal with using it.

Now to this my jaw nearly hit the floor. I am no Linux guru (though I probably should be given my working environment) but I could have sworn that Linux/Unix practically owns the server community. I know first hand that a very size-able proportion of embedded devices out there use Linux or a derivative of it.

So I'm just wondering if there is any statistical data out there that could possibly show me a % of Linux's world wide use, in total?

Or is it just a pipe dream and I should go back to "yeah but...open source rules!"

In the May 2009 survey we received responses from 235,890,526 sites, an increase of 4.3 million on last month. Apache remains firmly in the lead, having gained 3.3 million sites, and Microsoft-IIS remains second, having lost almost 0.9 million (mostly due to less activity seen at accounts on Microsoft's own Live Spaces service). QQ.com, the popular IM service in China, remains third with 29M sites. Google takes fourth place, after gaining approximately 1.5 million sites, and remains ahead of nginx which gained 200,000.

There's much more you can find if you search, but in many ways, all this data means nothing.

As the guy above said, Linux dominates the top 500 supercomputer list. So much so, that M$'s representation on the list is downright embarrassing.

For some reason, the site lists Linux with 389, but it puts SUSE, Centos and RedHat in separate categories (for some odd reason). At any rate, if you combine these with the 389 in the "Linux" category, you get Linux holding 429 of the top 500 spots. Where is Windows? It's sitting there with a pathetic 5.

Windows for my desktop cause i like my games. (And that is the only reason).

Ubuntu for my Laptop as it can't play many games and i use it more often as well.

DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS XP, RUNNING UBUNTU 9.04

The internet would not be what it is today IMO if it were not for Linux (LAMP)

ISP's and web hosts started switching to Linux very early on. Linux has a HUGE strangle hold on the interweb and as such, you can safely say that 99.9% of all web users interact with Linux on a daily basis.

Does it have to be PC companies or do other devices count too? There are hundreds of millions of Linux devices around the world in form of smart phones, e-book readers, etc. For example the Amazon Kindle uses Linux.

lol, love it. Some good stuff in here. I will collate and present tomorrow lol. I knew Linux dominated the net and Super computers (I work with a former Cray engineer) but I didn't realise it was that dominant :D

don't forget that the New York stock exchange uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux and that the NSA took part in developing SELINUX = Firewall which is used in many Distro's

I don't believe Microsoft makes a "super computer" edition. I'm pretty sure the reason they use Linux is that they can modify it for the own usages.

Ruin our fun why don't you :p

It's a good point though. The most amount of Linux use is indirect really. So really everyone in the entire world who uses the internet are Linux lovers :D

Indirectly.

I wouldn't call client to server interaction, "indirect".
