Need some assistance with doing an upgrade from an older 7.10 release to 8.04. Here's what I've tried:

1. Downloaded and mounted 8.04 ISO, and ran alt-f2 gksu "sh /media/cdrom0/cdromupgrade". It comes back with nothing.

2. Clicked on System > Administration > Update Manager in hopes I would see an upgrade option, but nothing appears. Probably because I'm so far back level on the OS version.

I would like to avoid a complete reinstall of the OS and would like to simply upgrade. Anyone know of a proven method of how I could accomplish this?

You typically do an in-place upgrade using the Upgrade Manager.

But first, you need to open Synaptic, go to Settings --> Repositories --> Updates tab. Down at the bottom, check that Release Upgrade says Normal Releases. If not, set it to that, close Synaptic, and relaunch Upgrade Manager.
