@nakama85, that's exactly what I sent you. In the first method, you simply copy the fully streamed video file from your /tmp directory, and the other 2 (online) methods perform that action for you on their own server.
Did I completely miss the point of your question? Are you asking about live streams in particular?

No I don't think you missed the point. I did try your method, however it was not able to download the vids I wanted.
I am trying to download vids from a site that hosts tv shows.
The reason I am trying to do this is not to redistribute, but to more act like tivo. I just want to be able to have them available to watch in case they are taken down. *note- the site I am using to view this content is completely legal*
Thanks for your help!:D

Ah, I see. I hope you find something! The /tmp directory method works well for YouTube (or it did for me, at least) but I haven't tried it on anything else. Care to post the name of the site you're trying to download from? I'd like to give it a shot.

Fancast.com and hulu.com
If you find a way to make it work let me know.
Thanks again for all your help

Ouch, if you're trying to record Hulu, you're barking up the wrong tree. They use sneaky Flash tricks to hide the URL of the video, and there's no handy local cache file (at least in any readable form). Understandable, since they have to keep their content providers comfortable, TV networks who are notoriously picky about how their content is released. I think it's amazing that there are any programs at all that can successfully download their content!
I'd bet Fancast is set up the same way, as it's a joint project between Hulu and Comcast.
Until someone writes a program to deal explicitly with Hulu videos, the last-ditch option would be to use screencast software that's able to record from a selected area of the screen. You draw a rectangle around the area to record, and let it roll. Your quality will vary based on your system's speed, of course. But a program like xvidcap would do the job.

Cool, well thanks for the info. I will have to try the screen cast method and see what kind of quality I get.
I did not know that it would be such a difficult task. (but then again I understand why)

There appears to be a command-line app called rtmpdump. It must be pretty controversial, as it seems Adobe has forced Sourceforge to remove the project from its site.
I googled a bit for it, but everything pointed to the defunct sourceforge page. Good luck finding it! I guess if we're being picky about it, the shows are intended to be watched as Hulu presents them, and not from a file on your hard drive... so proceed with caution. Murky legal waters ahead!

well guess I just wont proceed at all. I would rather stay on the legal side of things for the most part. That's why I use Ubuntu! Any program I could want to illegally download on windows, Linux has a free alternative for (for the most part)
I suppose I will just live with the sad reality that I wont be able to watch all my fav tv shows! lol --- Life will go on
