Installing Drivers

I'm trying to get some games work, so I booted up Envy to see my drivers.

It says none of my drivers are supported nor installed. I have ATI and NVIDIA cards.

How can I install them?

Standard rule of thumb in this forum is to bump no more often that once every 24 hours, so first off, quit bumping.

Second, need to know which specific model ATI and Nvidia cards you're planning on using because the drivers, especially for ATI, depend critically on the model of the card. There is no single generic answer.

Finally, open source drivers are installed automatically; restricted drivers depend on the card models and the version of Ubuntu you're running.

I'm totally new to Ubuntu and don't know where to view my drivers. I looked in system>administration>hardware drivers but it didn't show anything.

I was trying to get Team Fortress 2 to work, but I would get a black screen after the valve splash.

So I assumed it was my drivers, I downloaded EnvyNg and it said that my drivers werent supported by Ubuntu. Nor could I see my drivers in the "Hardware Drivers" panel.

So here I am. :o

I guess I have a driver problem too. A few days ago I reinstalled a computer with Ubuntu 8.10. It seems to work fine, but the computer is freezing every half hour or three quarters of an hour.
Could this be a driver problem? and how do I fix it?
The machine does not turn off or go to sleep or anything in that direction. It just stops reacting.

We're not mind readers, here. Can't help you with specifics without first knowing what model video card/chip you're using.

If you're running an ATI card/chip, entering "fglrxinfo" in a terminal will indicate whether or not you're running the ATI restricted drivers.

OK, so you're not running the restricted ATI drivers. Do an "lspci" in a terminal and look for information that will tell you which video chipset you're using.

Look in your lspci output where it says "VGA controller ..."

If you're running 9.04, you're stuck. The open source drivers, which are installed by default, are all that are available. AMD/ATI has dropped support for your chipset in the newer driver versions, and there is no driver version that works with Ubuntu 9.04.
