These lines have been appearing on my desktop for some time, but recently they've become a very often thing. Yesterday 50% of my desktop was filled with those lines!

Has anyone else encountered them? Are they extraterrastrials?

Does it go away if you change your background/wallpaper? Or change screen resolution? Other causes could be old/tired graphics card/monitor or corrupted video drivers.

These lines are below icons and windows, so it can't be the monitor or videocard.

I have tried turning compiz on and on and off but it doesn't help.

I haven't tried changing background or resolution, and I will when the lines appear again.

EDIT: Changing the background removes the lines. Any ideas?

Might be a corrupted .jpeg/.gif/.png whatever. Do the lines reappear when you switch back to the previous background?

They don't appear again. When they appear, they are on different places. They appear on all background images I have.
